The Wes Anderson Wedding of My Dreams

You know that feeling when you watch a movie or see art that seems like it was made for you?  That’s how I felt when I watched The Grand Budapest Hotel for the first time.  The color, storytelling style, and staging made me and all of my uniqueness feel at home and so creatively inspired.  I practically swooned when I watched the Royal Tenenbaums and Rushmore later.  This feeling was the inspiration for this styled wedding.  I wanted it to celebrate all of the colorful and unique things that make me the person that I am!

How I approach wedding design

I think a lot of people approach wedding decor based off of what they think a wedding “should” look like, what they think their guests will like, or what they think is superficially pretty.  Now don’t get me wrong, I’m a big supporter of pretty for pretty’s sake, but this day is all about you and your partner!  Let’s make it look and feel so unmistakably you!

I approach wedding design kind of like decorating a home because I want you and your spouse to feel so at home as you celebrate finally marrying your best friend.  With this in mind, let me walk you through how I designed my dream microwedding from start to finish!

1. I found a venue that did a lot of the work for me.

The airbnb we used already had an amazing foundation for me to work from.  All I had to do was add some finishing touches.  When you’re picking your venue, don’t settle for what just feels okay!  Josiah and I felt so alive in the wedding venue we were to get married in pre-covid.  I want you to feel this way too!

2. Picking the color story and creating a mood board

I pulled colors from the Rushmore movie and knew that I wanted an eclectic mix of vintage items.  I started pulling things that I’d been collecting (like my weird blue owl candy dish that my grandma found for me and the red glass oil lamp) to create a vision around.  I knew that I wanted loose florals, so I contacted one of my favorite florists (joy and bloom design co) to create the centerpiece.  Finally, I wanted our model’s outfits to fit the vibe, too.  Honestly this was probably the trickiest part.  We ended up going with a two piece jumpsuit that had a skirt that you could add on and it was the perfect fit!

3. Lastly, I mapped out each space - table, ceremony, bar area - with my rental items to figure out what else was needed.

I reached out to Living Lark to borrow a few fun cocktail making tools for the bar area and thrifted some last minute additions to the china hutch.

If you’re reading this and thinking “hot dang I’m obsessed,” let’s get together and figure out how we can bring a little Wes Anderson to your next get together!

Thank you to everyone who made this amazing day happen!
